A Tribute to Our Dear Friend Ted Lund

We at WhitefishRadio.com join with our community in celebrating the life of "Mr. Whitefish", Ted Lund. Join us as we pay tribute to a hometown legend on Tuesday, October 20, at 10:00 AM MST on Whitefish Times with host Jill Evans. Find out how a young man from Sherwood, North Dakota fell in love with Whitefish, Montana during his very first visit on a troop train in 1943. Hear the touching story from 1945 about spending two nights in the home where his Mother was born near war torn Hamburg, Germany. Ted also recounts how he started Whitefish Floral back in 1947, and how he met and married his beloved Connie. Ted speaks about the birth of his pride and joy, the Whitefish Winter Carnival Penguins, and sings the "Whitefish Song" as only Ted Lund could sing it. WhitefishRadio.com has also obtained a copy of a Ted Lund interview recorded by Pete Peterson back in the 1980's. We will be playing clips from that interview for the first time. We will also be posting exclusive video clips of Ted’s interview with Adam Pitman for the up-coming Whitefish Winter Carnival documentary to be released sometime around Christmas 2009. WEEKEND GET-AWAY TO SANDPOINT, IDAHO

Did you take a vacation outside the Flathead Valley this summer? It seems like most of us who live in the Valley usually don't. As the old saying goes, when you live in Northwest Montana, "there are nine months of winter and three months of company." But when you live in the most beautiful part of the state, it seems that everyone wants to come and stay with you in the summer.

With unseasonably chilly October temperatures and snow in the mountains making its way to the Valley floor, Mother Nature is blatantly dropping the hint that summer is definitely over and winter is well on its way! But what if you really did want to "get-away" from the Flathead Valley, and never found the time during the summer months? No worries! Fall is actually one of the most beautiful and best times to take a vacation. In fact, you will get a lot more "bang for your buck" not paying "peak season" tourist prices. Smart Travel Resources report, "Hotel rooms are 20% less on average." Plus, with tourists hard to find, many hotels and resorts now offer special weekend packages.

Case in point, my husband and I recently took a trip to Sandpoint, ID. Would you believe that on a Friday and Saturday night we found a room for two adults and two dogs, under $50.00? Yes, it's true. Fall specials are definitely out there and now is the time to take advantage of them!

Sandpoint's slogan is, "What a beautiful pace." Not only is it a beautiful place, it's also a wonderful town for kicking back and enjoy yourselves. If you have never been to Sandpoint, I must tell you it's the perfect weekend get-away! Only four hours west of Kalispell and about 90 minutes East of Spokane, the town has many similarities to Whitefish, Montana. Schweitzer Ski Resort and Lake Pend Oreille provide numerous outdoor activities. After a day of skiing or playing on the lake, Sandpoint offers an endless list of things to do; shopping, fine dining, theater, the choice is yours. Some of our favorite places to visit are: The Pine Street Bakery, Coldwater Creek Clothing Company, Cabin Creek Interiors, Northwest Handmade Furniture, and of course, the Pend d'Orielle Winery and the Laughing Dog Brewery, (yes, dogs are welcome at the brewery).

Rob Quist, known to many as Montana’s Musical Ambassador, and a founding member of the Mission Mountain Wood Band, has joined The Big Fish to bring a new exciting musical show to Montana and the World via the world-wide web. Beginning on March 6, 2008, Rob Quist will be on live every Thursday at 10AM MST at http://www.whitefishradio.com/, and each show will be available on demand the following day. What’s the show all about? Rob Quist describes it this way, “This show is going to be a reflection of the music I’ve played over the course of my career. I’ve really made my musical journey about writing songs about the people of the west and the history of this country and the people that live here, which, to me is infinitely more interesting than writing commercial songs. We’re going to be playing songs from some of the groups I’ve been in, such as the Mission Mountain Wood Band and the Montana Band, as well as other more eclectic groups.” Rob will be inviting many of his musical friends to join him on the show; friends whom he considers to be “some of the greatest musicians and songwriters in America.” He adds, “We also plan to do a lot of jamming on Whitefish Radio, with new songs that are just being born and maybe some that aren’t quite ready for show time yet, but are in the process of being made.”

Let's shift gears a bit, but stay with the entertainment theme. David Ackroyd has been with us all summer each Tuesday morning from 10 am to Noon MST. In the midst of his insanely busy summer, he managed to bring in special guests each week. If you missed any of the Lights! Camera! Ackroyd! shows, catch them on demand. What a phenomenal summer Alpine Theatre Project has had! There are still a few days left to see "Moonlight and Magnolias." The Big Fish went to all three plays and thoroughly enjoyed it all. David, Luke and Betsi together have brought something so fantastic to this community. Thank you ATP for entertaining us this summer. We are so fortunate to have you here in the Flathead Valley.

Summer has passed in the blink of an eye, as school gets underway. As another school year begins The Big Fish is gearing up to unveil our all new Flathead Valley Sports Page. Hopefully the "Old Pro" Mike Dowaliby will be able to make the others look like they know what they're doing on the course! Following the tournament, John Dunnigan will be performing during the BBQ. Whitefishradio.com had the distinct privilege of interviewing Bob Lee, a 65-year-old colon cancer survivor from Barrington, Illinois, as he passed through Whitefish, Montana on his bicycle. Bob is on a remarkable 6,500 mile journey across America in order to help find cures for cancer and ALS, and to help promote awareness for hospice care. These three reasons affect every community in every state, in every country, and that's why this story is of interest on a local, national and world-wide scale.

I have to be honest, when I first heard about Bob and his mission (before I did any research), my reaction was, "Oh, that's nice." I really didn't think much more about it, other than thinking it to be just another gimmick someone has put together to raise money for a charity. And this is not to say there's anything wrong with finding unique ways to capture an audience for charitable causes. Whatever works to raise money to help others is fine by me as long as it is with good intentions. I am pleased and embarrassed to say I couldn't have been more wrong about this one. When Bob was due to arrive in Whitefish, I was in the midst of and very close to wrapping up a hectic and exhausting week; not only with our business, but my weekday mornings were spent at our church's Vacation Bible School with over 210 kids. So, when Ross, my husband and business partner, asked me to join him on Friday morning for the interview to take photos, I reluctantly said I'd go knowing I had many other chores on my "to do" list. I can't put into words how blessed I was to have been invited to be a part of this indescribable experience. I am a true believer that meetings such as these are no accident. I will fall short of being able to put into words what this man is all about, but I hope millions of people across the country will have the opportunity to meet a true "American Idol" for themselves and experience his infectious optimism and belief in others. No, Bob didn't sing for us; He did much more than that. He is an inspiration, and an example of a real role model so desperately needed in today's broken world. What struck me most about Bob from the second I met him, was that there was no glitz and glamour, no entourage, no logo covered van with a logo covered trailer following behind carrying extra bikes, clothes, supplies, people, etc... There was no fanfare, nothing even close. It was just Bob, his bike and a few, and I mean very few necessities that fit in his bicycle packs. This was real! As I took pictures and listened to the interview, I found myself so lost in his honesty, good nature, and the sincerity behind his three reasons for making the trip. I left the interview in awe to have met and befriended a complete stranger in such a short period of time. Bob exemplifies everything that makes our country great. Freedom, courage, adventure and integrity, just to name a few. I also felt an overwhelming sense of sadness when he hopped on his bike and headed out towards his next stop in Essex, Montana. Not only was I sad for him when I learned that he received a phone call right after our interview informing him that a very dear friend of his had just passed away, but even more than that, I was saddened to think about all the people in our community who did not have the chance to meet Bob in person as I did. I wish more of my friends and neighbors could have experienced what I was so fortunate to have experienced. My hope is that everybody at least once in their lives will have the opportunity to meet a "Bob Lee" if not Bob Lee himself. I can't say enough about this incredible man and his incredible journey. The John Dunnigan Show for March 15

Tomorrow John will be joined by Thomas Marriott. Thomas is the "young lion of jazz trumpet players." They will be discussing the upcoming "Four Evenings of Irrepressible Jazz" presented by Simpson Subaru, and also the free trumpet clinic Marriott will be holding on March 23rd. The Jazz concerts will be on March 22nd at the Frontier Road House, March 23rd at the Whitefish Lake Golf Course, March 24th at Red's Wines and Blues, and March 25th at the Bigfork Inn. The clinic will be held at Whitefish High School at 4 PM on the 23rd. Listen tomorrow at 10 AM for all the details!

The Whitefish Bulldogs made a valiant run at state but unfortunately lost to Butte Central 48-41 today in loser-out action. Congratulations to the Dawgs on a successful season and to Julio Delgado on a successful career.

The Battle of the Bands is being held tomorrow at 7 o'clock at the Whitefish Armory. Tickets are $5 in advance and can be picked up at the Red Caboose or Lilac Lizard in Whitefish. It is sure to be a fun-filled evening complete with door prizes.
